A name that occurs only twice in the Bible ( Num 10:29; Judg 4:11 ). In the first passage it is the name of the father-in-law of Moses. The second passage is ambiguous, and it is not certain whether Hobab is the father-in-law or the brother-in-law of Moses.

Aug 2, 2013 · In the first passage Hobab is describes as the son of Reuel the Midianite--then note that the comma's placement shows we are describing Reuel as Moses' father-in-law. This would make Hobab Moses' brother-in-law. However, Judges 4:11 (ESV) says that Hobab is the father-in-law of Moses!

29. Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite—called also Reuel (the same as Jethro [Ex 2:18, Margin]). Hobab, the son of this Midianite chief and brother-in-law to Moses, seems to have sojourned among the Israelites during the whole period of their encampment at Sinai and now on their removal proposed returning to his own abode.
Hobab was an experienced sheikh of the desert whose counsel and companionship Moses desired in the unfamiliar regions through which he was to journey. His knowledge of the wilderness and of its possible dangers would enable him to be to the Israelites "instead of eyes."
Hoh´bab. One of three names for Moses’s father-in-law ( Judg 4:11 ). With Jethro ( Exod 3:1; Exod 18:1) and Reuel ( Exod 2:18 ), the name belongs to a complex tradition about Moses’s family. ( Num 10:29) defines Hobab as the son of Reuel, the founding father of the Kenites.
