Husbands must submit to their wives, and wives must submit to their husbands in the sense that they serve one another and put one another’s needs before the other. It’s mutual submission because the service they render to one another is completely reciprocal.

Scripture calls wives to submit to their husbands, but it also charges all Christians to submit to one another. How does that work in marriage?
Husbands and wives are to serve one another according to the principle of mutual Christian service, but the form this service takes is gender-specific. Thus, Ephesians 5:21 cannot be used to deny male headship and authority in the home. Wives serve their husbands by submitting to them (vv. 22–24).
