Marcellus Neal and Frances Marshall, the first male and female African American graduates of Indiana University, had their minds set on one goal—obtaining an education. At the time that they were students at IU, African Americans were not yet allowed to live on campus.

  3. In January 2002, the NMBCC was officially dedicated in honor of the first African American man and woman to graduate from Indiana University: Marcellus Neal, who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1895, and Frances Marshall, who received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1919.

Although the roots of the center can be found in 1960s student activism, the story of the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center is a history of Black student life on IU Bloomington’s campus.

Marcellus Neal and Frances Marshall. 1841–1880. 1842: The School of Law is established (now the IU Maurer School of Law). 1852: Alfred Ryors becomes the second IU president. 1853: William Mitchell Daily becomes the third IU president. 1854: The IU Alumni Association is founded. 1859: Theophilus A. Wylie serves six months as acting IU president.
