    Child marriage refers to any formal or informal union between a child under 18 and an adult or another child. The prevalence of child marriage has decreased worldwide, but remains widespread with up to 10 million more girls at risk due to COVID-19. The UN calls for global action to end this human rights violation by 2030.

    Addressing child marriage requires recognition of the factors that enable it such as poverty, lack of educational opportunities, limited access to health care, gender roles and stereotypes around marriage age, socio-economic risk of pregnancy outside of marriage.

    In 2016, UNICEF launched the Global Programme to End Child Marriage which empowers young girls at risk through life-skills training and comprehensive sexuality education reaching over 14 million adolescent girls since 2016 with 177 million people engaged in efforts to support adolescent girls.
