The praise American Beauty has received has waned in recent years, and in my opinion for good reason. At the time it was considering a critique on the American dream from the lens of a straight white upper class male. The acting, score, and story are quite memorable.
A lot of the movies that students tell me they love have changed through the years, as Tarantino and Coen brother enthsiasts have given way to Nolan and Villenueve enthusiasts, yet American Beauty has continued to be that film that numerous freshmen will cite as "their favorite movie", while seniors and grad students almost universally dislike it.

The actors' acting is amazing in this movie, the cinematography is really good too. The film has a certain melancholy and sad tone especially towards the end with Lester's final monologue.
