Kalamazoo ( / ˌkæləməˈzuː / KAL-ə-mə-ZOO) is a city in and the county seat of Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States. At the 2020 census, Kalamazoo had a population of 73,598. It is the principal city of the Kalamazoo–Portage metropolitan area in southwestern Michigan, which had a population of 261,670 in 2020.
It includes the two counties of the Kalamazoo–Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area plus one metropolitan area, Battle Creek in Calhoun County and one micropolitan area, Sturgis in St. Joseph County. Kalamazoo is located in southwestern Michigan approximately 136 miles west of Detroit, 73 miles southwest of Lansing, and 145 miles east of Chicago. It's easily accessible from both I-94 and U.S. 131 and is the county seat of Kalamazoo County.
