Xavier University was founded in 1831 as a Catholic men's college, the Athenaeum, in downtown Cincinnati, adjacent to St. Xavier Church. Cincinnati's first bishop, Edward Fenwick, dedicated the school to St. Francis Xavier on October 17, 1831.
