His mother Pauline Brière de Mondétour and father Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire had three children in all, Isidore being the eldest. His other two siblings were twin sisters, Anaïs and Stéphanie.

The only son of Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Isidore wanted to become a mathematician; but his father saw in him the continuator of his work and engaged him in his laboratory as an aide-naturalise in 1824, when he was only nineteen.
The French naturalist Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire wrote the first in-depth treatise on the gorilla in 1858; the wonderful lithograph, the first of its kind, was drawn by Marie Firmin Boucourt, who also executed a startling face-front portrait of a chimpanzee (see introduction to this section).
