Record: 320-126-4. State titles: 3 Bellamy won 268 of his games at Mount Vernon. He retired in 2006. His state titles came in 1974, 1993 and 1994.
Record: 407-60. State titles: 11 Inspiring and durable (he fought Guillain-Barre syndrome), Bladt's known for his sense of humor. He's led Harlan to a 5-1 record this year, which is his 41st season. He's reached the playoffs 36 times, including last season.
Record: 161-60. State titles: 3 Brown developed some powerhouse Little Hawk teams, as well as individual stars like Tim Dwight. He had 13 playoff qualifiers from 1986 to 2000. More: 1. Record: 134-12. State titles: 6 Cook, a former NFL player, later became one of the state's most successful coaches. He compiled a streak of 11 consecutive playoff appearances through last season. He was named the Register's high school coach of the year in 2014.
Record: 203-102-5. Crawford brought Valley to football prominence in the 1970s. The Tigers have been one of the state's top programs since that time. He retired in 1993.
Record: 171-49. Day, a multi-sport coach, also developed one of the state's top track programs. He coached at Davenport from 1923 to 1945.
Record: 186-99. State titles: 2 It was Dillon who brought Dowling back-to-back state titles in 2000-01after the team took runner-up honors seven times. He took Dowling to the playoffs seven times between 1996 and 2004. Currently, he coaches at Fort Dodge St. Edmond.

Record: 158-81. State titles: 1 A well-respected coach, Fiegel was executive secretary of the Iowa Football Coaches Association from 1977-1994. He started coaching in 1959. The IFCA's Coaching with Character awardis named for him.

- 2017: W.D.M. Dowling Catholic. Why they're deserving: The Maroons won their fifth consecutive Class 4A state championship in 2017. Blake Clark threw 27 touchdown passes with just one interception, while Jayson Murray ran for nearly 2,000 yards and 29 scores.
- 2017: Cedar Rapids Xavier. Why they're deserving: Went 13-0, ending Pella's 3A title run at three consecutive crowns. Quinn Schulte passed for 14 touchdowns and ran for 20 more.
- 2015: W.D.M. Dowling Catholic. Why they're deserving: The Maroons went 13-0 and beat previously undefeated Cedar Rapids Kennedy 41-10 in the Class 4A state championship.
- 2014: W.D.M. Dowling Catholic. Why they're deserving: Ryan Boyle guided the Maroons to the 4A state championship with more than 3,000 yards of offense. Seven Dowling players were named to the Sunday Register's all-state football team.
