Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking levothyroxine:

    • Heat intolerance. Thyroid hormones play a role in maintaining body temperature. When there are more thyroid hormones in your body — such as through levothyroxine use — your core body temperature can go up.
    • Sweating. You might sweat more than normal, especially on your palms or feet, while you’re taking levothyroxine. Elevated levels of thyroid hormones can turn on your body’s “fight-or-flight” response, which can lead to sweating.
    • Irregular heartbeats or palpitations. Some people taking levothyroxine can have irregular heartbeats, like a fast heart rate or heart palpitations. Sometimes, this can feel like a racing or pounding heart.
    • Diarrhea. While taking levothyroxine, you may experience diarrhea. Elevated thyroid hormone levels can cause your gut to make more digestive juices and speed up how fast things move through your small intestine, causing diarrhea.
