Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel. Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel was the brainchild of Rich Lupo. The Boston native moved to Providence to attend Brown University. Lupo stated that his dream was to own a club where Bo Diddley would play (which came to fruition in 1977). Prior to opening the club, Lupo had worked as a house painter and a bartender.
Boston, MA159 contributions. Formerly great club, not the same. Lupo's used to be a Providence staple - the cramped sweaty club where I saw Elvis Costello, Sonic Youth, and countless others. It moved down the street into a bigger, souless building without half the character the old place had. I've seen some good shows here, but it isn't the same.
The new Heartbreak Hotel represented something of a philosophical change for Lupo. "The old club was a bar that had concerts, while this is a concert club," Lupo explains. The new Lupo's is bigger and cleaner than its predecessor, but it retains the same unpretentious roadhouse feel.
