May 8, 2012 · Hailed as the Father of the U.S. Armored Forces, Major General Adna R. Chaffee, Jr. was one of the most influential military leaders during the interwar war period. Although a cavalry officer, he envisioned an independent, fast-striking mechanized/armored force, which became the modern-day US Armor branch.
He became a major general in the regular army in 1901 as well. In the next couple of years, he served as governor of the Philippines and led the Department of the East. Promoted to lieutenant general in 1904, Chaffee served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 9 January 1904 to 14 January 1906.
The M24, nicknamed the Chaffee in honor of Major General Adna R. Chaffee, Jr., the “Father of the Armored Force,” weighed in a little over nineteen tons (38,750 pounds). It had a length of 16 feet, 9 inches (18 feet with the main gun), a width of 9 feet, 4 inches, and a height of 8 feet, 1 inch.
