Mission Carmel ( a.k.a. The Carmel Mission) was the second mission built by Franciscan missionaries in Upper California. It was first established as Mission San Carlos Borromeo in Monterey, California near the native village of Tamo on June 3, 1770, by Father Junípero Serra.

Two days after his arrival, on June 3, 1770, Father Serra founded Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo at the site of the present Presidio Chapel in Monterey.
Fr. Serra found the climate and surroundings of Monterey so much to his liking that Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo became his favorite mission and the headquarters of the mission chain. In July, 1770, Portolá turned his command over to Lieutenant Fages, and departed forever from the pages of California history.
