May 5, 2022 · Los Alamos is located in northern New Mexico between the Rio Grande and the eastern rim of the Valles Caldera on the Pajarito Plateau, approximately 35 mi (56 km) to the northwest of Santa Fe. The elevation at the post office is 7,320 feet (2,230 m).
Depart west from Los Alamos via State Road 501 and turn right onto State Road 4 (SR 4) toward Jemez (HEY-mess) Springs, traveling through Bandelier National Monument. The road leads up more than 1,000 feet through dense forest, cresting at an elevation of 9,000.

Valley of the Gods features a landscape similar to Monument Valley. It may not be quite as spectacular, but it also has much less tourist traffic. If you like scenic drives and want to leave the crowds behind, put this spot on your list.
This rock formation is named for its Mexican Sombrero-like appearance. You can see it from US-163 on the drive to the Valley of the Gods. If you want, you can hike up onto the formation.
For a view of the San Juan River snaking through a canyon, visit Goosenecks State Park. Imagine two Horseshoe Bends right next to one another! You will pay a $5 entry fee and it is a short drive to the viewpoint.
This short but scenic drive is located very close to Valley of the Gods. Moki Dugway is an unpaved road that is carved into the cliffs, offering stunning views over Utah and Valley of the Gods.
