Jean Carolyn Craighead George (July 2, 1919 – May 15, 2012) was an American writer of more than one hundred books for children and young adults, including the Newbery Medal-winning Julie of the Wolves and Newbery runner-up My Side of the Mountain. My Side of the Mountain is a beautifully written book by jean Craighead George that is about a teenage boy, Sam Gribley, who decides to run away from his home in New York City to live in the Catskill Mountains. The book is told both through the eyes of Sam and from various journal entries he writes during his time in the woods.

It is the first in a five-book series, though George’s sequel, On the Far Side of the Mountain, was not published until 1990.
