Roux's name first became famous. Pierre Paul lmile Roux was born in 1853 in Confolens, a small town in central France. His father was the Principal of the local Collkge who left, on dying, a number of young children unprovided for. These, and Emile among them, were adopted and educated by their brother-in-law.
