Running in the Family is a fictionalized memoir, written in post-modern style involving aspects of magic realism, by Michael Ondaatje. It deals with his return to his native island of Sri Lanka , also called Ceylon, in the late 1970s.
The memoir begins with a nightmare that Ondaatje has while living in Canada about his father, Mervyn. In the dream, Mervyn is surrounded by vicious, thrashing dogs in the jungle. When Ondaatje wakes, he realizes that he does not know who his father truly was, or much about his family history at all.
Jan 1, 1982 · In Running in the Family, he returns as an adult to try and learn about the extended family he left behind. The book combines pieces of prose and poetry to form a partially fictionalised, dream-like picture of Sri Lanka weaving between time, place and person.
