The Sawyer House, also known as the Sawyer Homestead and in its previous incarnation as the Navarre House, is a city-owned house located at 320 East Front Street in Monroe, Michigan. It was listed as a Michigan Historic Site on June 19, 1975.
Dr. Alfred I. Sawyer and his family lived there from 1859 to 1870. It was then demolished to make room for the present structure. The charming Italiante home (pictured above) was completed in 1873. Dr. Sawyer was one of the early proponents of homeopathy as the correct philosophy of medicine.
Historic Sawyer Homestead Building is the home of Dr. Alfred I. Sawyer and his family. Completed in 1879, the home and the site on which it stands are reminders of many elements in Michigan's past.
Sawyer, who secured the establishment of the homeopathy department at the University of Michigan, served as mayor of Monroe in 1869–1870 and in 1878. Bracketed eaves, corbeled chimneys, an unusual round-arched central wall dormer, corner quoins, and cresting enliven the two-and-a-half-story house.
The Sawyer House was built in 1873 and is located at 320 East Front Street within the Old Village Historic District. On July 4, 1910, then-President William Howard Taft and Elizabeth Bacon Custer unveiled a statue to commemorate George Armstrong Custer, who spent much of his early life living in

The Sawyer House, built in Italianate architecture, replaced the Navarre House on the property in 1873. While Dr. Sawyer did not live in the house after 1870, the property remained in his family's ownership. His daughter, Jenny Toll Sawyer, gave the house to the city of Monroe in 1938. [3]
