Jan 22, 2016 · In the 1880s Mary McDowell worked with the Women's Christian Temperance Union, which advocated the right of women to vote. Her experiences at Hull-House and strong sympathies for the striking railroad workers in 1894 prompted her to devote the rest of her life to the settlement house in Back of the Yards, and to labor reform.

Mary Eliza McDowell (November 30, 1854 – October 14, 1936) was an American social reformer and prominent figure in the Chicago Settlement movement .
Her settlement house served countless immigrants and, later, Blacks coming to Chicago during the first wave of the Great Migration. McDowell’s work also led to ten new neighborhood parks – including Davis Square Park in Back of the Yards – to give workers and crowded neighborhoods much-needed green space.

Upon completion of Elizabeth Harrison's training program, she became the kindergarten teacher at Hull House and founder of the settlement Woman's Club. In 1894 McDowell took charge of a small program near the stockyards which the Christian Union of the University of Chicago had started.

Oct 1, 2014 · In the 1930s, the settlement house re-established itself as the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council, taking on issues of labor and housing rehabilitation under the leadership of organizers Saul Alinsky and Joseph Meegan. The BYNC still exists, one of the longest-standing organizations of its kind.
