Girish Karnad was born in Matheran, Maharashtra in a Saraswat Brahmin Konkani family to Rao Saheb Dr Karnad and Krishna Bai Mankeekara. While in Sirsi, Karnataka, Girish was exposed to the traveling theater group, Natak Mandalis.
