The unit of the village continued to be important and hold is value as integral to what India represented. The caste and class divide and their intricacies are shown through their socio-political interplay and power relations.
Manthan: Directed by Shyam Benegal. With Girish Karnad, Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah, Anant Nag. A young veterinary surgeon, Dr. Rao, who makes a visit to a village, where he intends to commence a co-operative society dairy for the betterment of the rural people.
Critics reviews. Dr. Rao, a veterinary surgeon, arrives in a village of poor farmers in the Kheda district. He wants to set up a dairy cooperative, which upsets not only the middlemen, who are exploiting the villagers, but also the age-old feudal structure of the village.
