After decades of waiting, Jim Henson's beautiful, strange, and groundbreaking puppet masterpiece The Dark Crystal has returned to screens in the guise of Netflix's critically acclaimed 10 episode series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Though he began his journey branded as a traitor, the last episodes of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance saw Rian (Taron Egerton) get his hands on the legendary Skeksis-stopping weapon known as the Dual Glaive, discovering that his father Ordon (Mark Strong) had wielded the blade before him. With this knowledge and the backing of his partner Deet (Nathalie Emmanuel), who has been imbued with the powers of the Tree, Rian utilizes the fires of Thra to call for a Gelfling rebellion against the Skeksis. Before the final battle, Brea, Deet, and Rian are reunited along with the other clans of Gelfling who've finally realized that the Skeksis have been playing them against each other. Despite unimaginable odds, the Gelfling win and take down the enemies they once thought were immortal with the help of the Crystal Shard which is revealed to be inside the Dual Glaive.

Though it's a happy ending for the clans of the Gelfling, the same can't be said for Deet. She took on the power of the Darkening to beat the Skeksis but appears to have been corrupted by it, spreading the disease through the woods as she walks away from Rian and her family. This moment is particularly important as it seems to set up Season Two and is also something that has been teased since the earliest episodes. When Deet first communed with the power of the Tree she saw a vision of the future, the montage featured many moments from the series including her teaming up with Rian but most importantly here it showed the young Gelfling a vision of herself covered with purple veins and eyes, and her skin a sickly green color. It was a stark warning that she would end up being corrupted by the power that she had to use to save the seven clans of the Gelfling and sadly it came true in the final moments.

Though they are some of the most iconic villains from family film canon, little was known about the Skeksis unless you'd deep dived into some of the more esoteric Dark Crystal lore. Age of Resistance rectified that with the series following the creatures and exploring the motivations behind their nefarious deeds. As the season came to an end it was revealed that the Skeksis were, unlike the other inhabitants of Thra, not a part of the Force that holds everything together. This existential crisis was what had driven their desperation to be immortal and their horrifying use of the Crystal of Truth to drain the essence of the Gelfling in order to extend their lives.

After being beaten by the Gelfling, the Skeksis do something unthinkable even for them, and release the power of the Darkening on Thra. But before it can do too much damage, Deet takes on the power of the violent disease and uses it to beat the bird-like beings, forcing them to retreat. It's a far cry from the victorious and all-powerful creatures that we meet at the beginning of Frank Oz's cult movie, so it could be interesting to see how they regained their power. The fact that the Scientist (Mark Hamill) has invented a violent new weapon known as Garthim--that will be instantly recognizable to fans of the film--will likely have something to do with it, especially as the official Dark Crystal timeline places the events of Age of Resistance just before the so-called "Garthim War."

Though watching the 1982 fantasy movie isn't a must before enjoying Age of Resistance if you are a fan, you'll likely have enjoyed watching the film build on the sprawling lore that was set up in Jim Henson's cult puppet masterpiece. As the series moved towards its ends we got some big narrative nods to the original along with some moments that led...

Another key reveal was urVa the Mystic's connection to Mother Aughra. It's a connection that's truly showcased when urVa sacrifices himself in order to kill the resurrected SkekMal--who has been brought back utilizing Aughra's essence--to help save the Gelfling. We also learn that this is how Aughra was reborn, leaving her ready to help Jen and Kir...

Netflix has yet to announce a second season but the show has been widely celebrated by critics, and if viewers share their enthusiasm then there is still plenty for the series to explore. The biggest questions that are left after the finale center on just what happened after the successful Gelfling uprising to lead to the eradication of the elf-like race who have been almost completely wiped out when we meet them in the first act of the 1982 fantasy film. The show could explore the infection of Deet and the likelihood of her friends Rian and Brea trying to save her.

There's also the matter of the Gelfling clans and their own political allegiances. This season saw them battle each other and even offer to ally themselves with the Skeksis rather than work together. One of the biggest compliments that Age of Resistance has received is its similarity to the epic world-building of Game of Thrones, so exploring the inner workings of the clans and their struggle through the Garthim war could be a brilliant extension of that.
