On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 87% of 189 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.4/10. The website's consensus reads: "Deft direction and strong performances from its all-female cast guide The Descent, a riveting, claustrophobic horror film."

This movie has a great setup with a close group of long time friends having fun and reuniting for different outdoor adventures. From the beginning the directing is great.

Our review: Parents say ( 12 ): Kids say ( 35 ): Equal parts yucky, scary, and delirious, The Descent is also clever about its limits, and chilling in its effects. It sets up a specific emotional situation for its protagonist, then turns it inside out, with the help of especially daunting monsters.
