During the summer months, expect hot, dry temperatures. Daily high temperatures June through August range from 90 to 100°F. The park is named for its large amount of petrified wood, fossils of fallen trees that lived 225 million years ago when the climate was humid and sub-tropical. Petrified wood retains the shape and texture of the original wood, but polishes to a shine like any other crystal.

Jul 18, 2021 · Petrified Forest National Park has two visitor centers on either end of the 28-mile main park road. Since Painted Desert Visitor Center is just off I-40 at exit 311, most visitors begin their trip with the 18-minute orientation film there.
