His first marriage was to Tunku Sofiah binti Almarhum Tunku Mahmud (born 1899) in 1922. The marriage produced an heir, who was the fifth and fourteenth King of Malaysia and the Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah. Tunku Sofiah died in 1934 caused by an automobile accident.

Of Malay and Thai descent, his mother was the Kedah-born princess Tunku Sofiah binti Tunku Mahmud (born 29 April 1899), who died in an automobile accident on 28 February 1934. Abdul Halim's maternal grandfather, Tunku Mahmud, was once Raja Muda ( heir presumptive) to the throne of Kedah.

Tunku Sofiah Tunku Mahmud was born on month day 1910, to YTM Tunku Mahmud Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Mukarram Shah. Tunku had 7 siblings: Tunku Abdullah Nur ibni Tunku Mahmood, Tunku Sepora bt Tunku Mahmood and 5 other siblings. Tunku passed away on month day 1935, at age 24.
