American linguist Noam Chomsky published a review of Skinner's Verbal Behavior in the linguistics journal Language in 1959. Chomsky argued that Skinner's attempt to use behaviorism to explain human language amounted to little more than word games.
Skinner treats them briefly, but they play a pervasive role in verbal behav-ior and are particularly important in educational settings. Furthermore, they illustrate Skinner’s interpretive approach: the analysis of each type of verbal operant in terms of its characteristic antecedents and conse-quences.
