How did California get its name?
Back in the 1500s, when the Spanish were first exploring America, they landed upon an area of the mainland that they believed to be an island. They named this region “California.” The name derives from a 16th-century Spanish novel about Queen Califa, the ruler of a mythical island paradise called “California.” The “Golden State” nickname is thanks to the discovery of gold and the Californian Gold Rush in the late 19th century.
Who “discovered” California?
When the European explorers first arrived in California, there was already a high population of Native Americans living in the area. They belonged to different tribes such as the Yuma, Pomo, Mohave, and Maidu groups. Portuguese-born maritime explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first to visit California, landing in San Diego in 1542.
