Sales tax 101. Sales tax is a tax paid to a governing body (state or local) on the sale of certain goods and services. New Jersey first adopted a general state sales tax in 1935 at a rate of 2 percent, but it was quickly repealed. It was reinstituted at 3 percent in 1966, and since that time, the base sales tax rate has risen to 6.625 percent.
