The first pair of legs actually functions more like arms, and each has a sharp pincer attached to the end. The right claw is larger and thicker, and it is designed for crushing.

Larvae are shrimp-like and free-swimming. After three molts (typically taking 3-5 months to complete), larvae become become known as megalops. During this stage, intermediate between larvae and adult, megalops settle to the sea floor and feed on detritus for about 30 days. After this, they molt again, becoming juveniles.
Adult P. opilio have a body length of 3.5–9 mm (1 ⁄ 8 – 3 ⁄ 8 in). Males tend to have smaller bodies than females, but have noticeably larger pedipalps and chelicerae with prominent outgrowths (horns) on the dorsal side of the second segment.
Appearance. The most notable features of P. opilio and many other harvestmen are the long, slender legs and short, globular body. Adult body length is approximately 3.5–9 mm, with males generally smaller than females.
The Opilio crab has a body that looks very small in comparison to the long thin legs. Opilio Crabs are covered wtih an oval shaped back, or carapace, which is a deep reddish orange. The legs are usually orange on top and a creamy tan or white on the bottom. Opilio crabs will weigh about two pounds.
