     It will cause a dynamic memory allocation failure, which usually will make the resultant application crash, but technically, an application could be written to withstand this event. 2GB is indeed the user address space size for an individual process- an application may use multiple processes (easiest example: Chrome). If an application asks for 100MB of contiguous memory, that memory must be virtually contiguous even if not physically contiguous, and if there aren't enough contiguous pages available then it's a failed allocation.

     Virtual memory is always used- all memory is virtual.

     2GB is the limit under most circumstances. What happens is that normally, 2GB is for the user and 2GB for the kernel, but you can ask Windows to make this 3GB for the user and 1GB for the kernel (at some risk), and on 64bit, the whole 4GB of 32bit address space is available to the user. The increased address space is only available if you compile your application as /LARGEADDRESSAWARE.

     You should set DisablePagingExecutive to 1 and use the 64-bit version of WPT if you are using 64-bit Windows.

     The 64-bit version of WPT is needed because the 32-bit version won't even install on 64-bit Windows.

     Setting DisablePagingExecutive to 1 is needed because even a 32-bit program can make calls into the 64-bit kernel. In order to get full call stacks that include the kernel code you need to lock the metadata into non-pageable memory, which is what setting DisablePagingExecutive does.

     Just set it. It doesn't cost much (it uses a bit more memory) and if you set it you don't need to worry about it.

     And the simplest way to set it is to use a trace recording UI. wprui is one choice (it ships with the Windows Performance Toolkit) but I prefer UIforETW. Details at https://randomascii.wordpress.com/2015/09/24/etw-central/

     I'm pretty sure it'll work automatically (even on a 64-bit machine) as long as the executing process is 32-bit.

     Try recompiling to target x86 specifically.

     In Windows:

     The major problem with running 16bit program in 32bit OS is that most of 16bit programs used to run on Real Mode, which is not supported anymore(by the OS). These modes are fundamentally different and therefore require software emulation. Also since all of the 16bit API stubs, DOS functions, and BIOS calls are not available, programs would not really be able to interact with the operating system, thus making them unusable without some kind of emulation. In case of Windows, NTVDM does all the emulation starting from Windows NT3.1.

     Of course, if your program does not require any interaction with the OS, you should be able to run it. In terms of the opcodes and instruction set, it is true 32bit x86 is superset of 16bit x86. It's just that the environment in which the code usually runs on is completely different.
