During the Depression of the 1880s, girls from the Girls’ High School joined the Auckland College and Grammar School as it was then known, mainly out of economic necessity. In 1899, the School once again became known as Auckland Grammar School, but girls remained on the roll until 1909.

Production of the School List began in August 1882 and continues every year to record the staff and every boy who attended the School in that year. This includes boys who only attended for part of the year. For the years from 1888 until 1906, girls were also included in the School Lists.
