- Dexed. Frequency modulation (FM) synthesis has a bit of a rep of being difficult to master, mostly due to Yamaha’s DX7 – the hardware FM synth that defines the genre.
- discoDSP OB-Xd 2.0. The OB-X was a fat and warm-sounding 80s hardware polysynth that barged its way to prominence with the help of Jean-Michel Jarre, Herbie Hancock, Van Halen and Queen – among plenty other artists.
- Surge. Used by the likes of Roger Linn, Surge is a free, open-source software synth that was, until 2019, a paid product. The subtractive hybrid synth features three oscillators per voice with eight oscillator algorithms plus oscillator FM/ring modulation to quickly mutate your sounds.
- TAL Noisemaker. NoiseMaker builds on the success of TAL’s Elek7ro synth and is a relatively straightforward virtual analogue soft synth. Despite its simplicity, with three oscillators, several different filters and a pleasing amount of modulation capabilities, it can make some seriously powerful sounds.
- Vember Audio Surge. Surge is an open-source monster that has been the talk of the freeware town for more than ten years now, and with good reason. Via the hard work of its community, it now has cavernous libraries of dual-scened presets, with three oscillators per scene.
- Dexed. Dexed has been around for quite a while, and still endures as an exceptional sounding software take on Yamaha’s FM synth innovator, the DX7. Though it may need some time to understand how each section works, the resulting sounds Dexed is capable of producing are gloriously retro.
- Vital Basic. Former video game developer Matt Tytel’s forays into synth design have come to excellent fruition with Vital. Focused on wavetable synthesis, Vital encourages the creation and inter-mingling of wavetables and samples.
- Baby Audio Comeback. Well, we can’t ignore this superb free delay that we ourselves had a hand in producing, can we? Baby Audio’s Comeback presents a whittled down version of the company’s larger Comeback Kid, an intuitive delay which imparts analogue warmth onto your sounds.
