Depends on what you want. AoE 4 for Graphics & Combat Mechanics. AoE 3 for the unbelievable amount of content and replayability (people literally have no clue just how vast the amount of content in this game is. Think all the other age of empires combined x 5). AoE 2 for nostalgia and competition.
Right now, AoE2 is a far better game. The civ design is functional, and the minute changes allow for focused power spikes and reasonable responses. Many more civ and tech options, with a readable map and UI. Only problems are the OP crossbow micro and the guaranteed hole in the wall.

For singleplayer content, AoE2 takes the win, because it has far more content. But if you're a history nerd, AoE4 singleplayer content is superior in quality (but much smaller). For multiplayer, AoE4 wins, both in quality and quantity (yes, quantity too, despite only 10 civs).
AOK at the time was better than AOE4 in 2021. Both got bugs, both got poor balance, both had bad pathing, but at least the formers units were distinguishable, while most of the essential hotkeys being customizable.
Aug 9, 2023 · Right now AOE 3 and AOE 4 are battling each othe… Which game looks best doesn’t only come down to the taste but also to the hardware of the user. AoE4 is the only one that supports HDR for example but that only matters if you have an expensive HDR monitor.
