May 19, 2023 · It’s only two hours north of Columbus, but it looks like it’s half a world away. Ohio is dotted with former and active quarries. From freestone to limestone, the rocks pulled from the earth in Ohio had a massive impact on construction around the United States in the 19th century.
One of the most used build-ings stones of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s in Ohio and around the world is the Berea Sandstone, named for the city of Berea, southwest of Cleveland. This sandstone (also called the Berea Grit) was quarried in Berea and other ar-eas in Ohio. The largest quarries are in the South Amherst area in Lorain County.
That depends on where they sit. The quarries up by Marble Cliff and Upper Arlington were re-developed into unusual residential communities like Hidden Lakes and Limestone Pointe. Campbell Mound Quarry is being used by the Water Department as a dump for filtering sludge from the Dublin Road Water Treatment Plant.

History. In the early 1840s, quarry activities began in the area to mine a narrow belt of Columbus and Delaware limestone which stretched all the way from the Scioto River to the Olentangy River adjacent to Marble Cliff, Ohio.
Quarry Trails is Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks 20th park in the district. Metro Parks has turned an abandoned quarry into a recreation destination for residents of Franklin County and beyond.
Quarry Trails will be home to Ohio’s first via ferrata, a fixed-cable climbing route that will traverse over the quarry pond and feature an 85-foot suspension bridge before topping out at the cliff line above.
