The Academy Award for Best Production Design recognizes achievement in art direction on a film. The category's original name was Best Art Direction, but from 1939 through 1956 and again from 1959-1966, it was divided into two categories Best Art Direction (Black-and-White) and Best Art Direction (Color). It changed to its current name, Best Production Design, in 2012 for the 85th Academy Awards. This change resulted from the Art Director's branch of the Academy being renamed the Designer's branch. Since 1947, the award is shared with the Set Decorator(s).

Sep 16, 2023 · As filmmaking technology progressed to incorporate more elaborate sets and visual environments, the award was renamed to “Best Art Direction” in 1939. It would retain some variation of this title for many years, even as the criteria expanded to include both interior design and outdoor set creation.
'Oscar for Best Art Direction', initially, was given for the interior design in a film. This category has undergone many changes since then. In 1940, a separate category of awards were introduced for color and black & white movies. In 1947, the name of the award was changed to Art Direction - Set Decoration.
