Selling a beautiful handmade Viola da Terra from the mid 1800s. A Francisco Martins Cabral 12-String Viola Da Terra that is set to play with 5-Stings in 3/3/2/2/2 string configuration. The body is parlor sized and is very detailed and solid. No signs of cracks or repairs. Looks to be original.
Manuel Silva, probably, Viola da Terra, c.1950, New Bedford. This instrument from the Portugese islands of the Azores was probably made in the U.S. It has a three-piece spruce top, mahogany back and sides, and both a multi-colored inlay and a walnut inlay.
Dec 20, 2017 · I've worked on a number of viola da terras. They're all folksy-as-heck in build and I'm never sure whether to fix them up for "modern playing tastes" or not. This one looks like it was built in the '30s but has a 1986 repair label in its soundholes. I imagine that's when it received a plywood back, too.
