Mafia is a strict linear expeirence GTA is a Sandbox with Arcade roots The only game that sort of emulated GTA's style was Mafia 3. However for the sake of the questiom at hand I would say I prefer Mafia's ever evolving world to GTA's static world.

- Tone. Mafia, first and foremost, is a franchise that aims to tell very human stories of characters players can even relate to at some level. The scale of the games (except Mafia III) are much more contained than the epic nature of the GTA games.

Both the games abound in organized crime, car chases, and shootouts. One of these can always be looked upon as a break from the other when one mission gets too complicated and players seek a breather. The similarity in the basic idea keeps the flow intact.
Mafia and Grand Theft Autohave a distinct story-based approach, and gamers quite often find themselves immersed in the storytelling and the narration of these games. Both these stories have been, undoubtedly, very effectively written.
These games are a treat for open-world enthusiasts with a knack for organized crime games. Some elements in the Mafia echo those similar to San Andreasand Grand Theft Auto 4.
Both the games are based on a retro setting, apart from modern Grand Theft Auto games. The Mafia trilogy is set in the 60s, while a majority of the games in the GTA series are set in the 80s.

Once again, THE BEST MAFIA GAME EVER! Mafia 3: This has an ok story and that is probably it. I cannot tell you, as a person who love the franchise, how dissapointed i am about this. Graphics are not the main ingrediant of a game and this is good example for it.
