Southern gospel music is a genre of Christian music. Its name comes from its origins in the southeastern United States. Its lyrics are written to express either personal or a communal faith regarding biblical teachings and Christian life, as well as (in terms of the varying music styles) to give a Christian alternative to mainstream secular music.
Christian country music, sometimes referred to as country gospel music, is a sub-genre of gospel music with a country flair. It peaked in popularity in the middle 1990s. Bluegrass gospel music is rooted in American mountain music. Celtic gospel music infuses gospel music with a Celtic flair, and is quite popular in countries such as Ireland.
The earliest issues of Singing News did not use the term to mean anything other than gospel music in the South, that is, “southern” gospel. However, later issues placed greater significance on the term as an identifying mark; in reality, the fate of the term was sealed with the organization of the Southern Gospel Music Guild in 1986.
