  2. Apr 17, 2024 · By Keith O'Hara. Last updated: April 17, 2024. The best things to do in Cork City are, in my opinion, Blackrock Castle, Cork City Gaol and the Shandon Bell Tower, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg! Ireland’s second larges city is often overlooked, with many that visit the county heading straight for West Cork or the likes of Cobh and Kinsale.

    • Ring the Shandon Bells. One of Cork’s most iconic landmarks is the bell tower of St. Anne’s Church, which overlooks the city from its lofty perch in the historic Shandon district.
    • Visit the Butter Museum. If you went shopping for butter in the 19th century, chances are you would have had little difficulty getting your hands on some authentic Cork butter.
    • Shop at the English Market. The English Market in Cork is a sprawling indoor market that connects to several different streets in Cork, giving it a maze-like feel.
    • See a dance show at the Firkin Crane. Why not experience a bit of local culture during your time in Cork? The Firkin Crane, located in a heritage building in Shandon, is the most unique spot in the city to catch a work of performance art.

    • Shop at the English Market. Arguably, the English Market is the most iconic landmark in Cork. This covered market is beloved by locals for its fresh produce and other food items, but tourists can enjoy artisan local olives or a reasonably priced sandwich from the sandwich stall.
    • Ring the Shandon Bells. One of the most unique things to do in Cork is visit St Anne’s Church, home of the Shandon Bells. St Anne’s Church is one of the oldest churches in the city, dating back to 1722.
    • Look out over Cork City from Elizabeth Fort. My favorite view of Cork City is from Elizabeth Fort, a star-shaped fort that looks out over Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral and the River Lee.
    • Take in the sights on Oliver Plunkett Street. The main shopping and pub street in Cork is Oliver Plunkett Street, and it’s the liveliest spot to be on a Friday or Saturday night.
