Jan 16, 2020 · Legends often require little time to grab the public’s imagination and so it was with the Gee Bees. The airplanes were designed and built in less than six months and from August 1932, when the R-1 first flew, to the tragic demise of both airplanes, barely a year and a half had elapsed.
The R-1 was built specifically for the Thompson Trophy pylon race, while the R-2 was built for the Bendix Trophy cross-country race, carrying a much larger fuel load. As the 1932 Cleveland air races loomed, the Granvilles found themselves with a fast plane but no pilot.
