orthopyroxene, any of a series of common silicate minerals in the pyroxene family. Orthopyroxenes typically occur as fibrous or lamellar (thin-plated) green masses in igneous and metamorphic rocks and in meteorites.

The enstatite-ferrosilite series ([Mg,Fe]SiO 3) includes the common rock-forming mineral Hypersthene, contains up to 5 mol.% calcium and exists in three polymorphs, orthorhombic orthoenstatite and protoenstatite and monoclinic clinoenstatite (and the ferrosilite equivalents).
A large group of inosilicate (chain silicate) minerals with the general formula ADSi 2 O 6. It is divided into the Clinopyroxene Subgroup (monoclinic) and the Orthopyroxene Subgroup (orthorhombic). The most recent nomenclature is given by Morimoto et al. (1988).
Orthopyroxenes are a group of minerals ranging from pure MgSiO 3 (enstatite) to pure FeSiO 3 (ferrosilite). Bronzite and hypersthene are orthopyroxenes mid-way between these two end members.
Dec 16, 2022 · The colors are artifacts and not the true color of the minerals. An original pyroxene (subcalcic augite) unmixed upon cooling, producing exsolution lamellae (the stripes) and the texture we see here. The blue-red lamellae are clinopyroxene and the light colored lamellae are orthopyroxene.

What is the formula for orthopyroxene?
The pyroxene group includes minerals that form in both the orthorhombic and monoclinic crystal systems. Orthorhombic pyroxenes are referred to as orthopyroxenes, and monoclinic pyroxenes are called clinopyroxenes.
