History. In 1821 the duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt created districts (called Landratsbezirke) in the reorganisation of its internal administration. In the area of today's district the districts of Giessen and Grünberg were created. 1822 another district called Hungen was created.
The town became part of Hesse-Marburg in 1567, passing to Hesse-Darmstadt in 1604. The University of Giessen was founded in 1607. Giessen was included within the Grand Duchy of Hesse created in 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars. After the First World War, it was part of the People's State of Hesse.

In 1527 the Lutherans in Marburg moved to Giessen (a few kilometres further south, within the borders of Hessen-Darmstadt), and founded a new Lutheran university. Despite being very close to each other, the Lutherans in Hessen-Darmstadt were frustrated to be regarded as second-line protestants.
