The first football team fielded by UCLA took the field in 1919. The team was coached by Fred Cozens, and compiled a 2–6 record. UCLA did not participate in an athletic conference until 1920, so the 1919 football team played a schedule full of local high schools and other assorted teams.
Most major college athletics programs did not allow Black players until 1947. In 1939, very few college football teams had even one Black player on their roster. The Bruins had four — Jackie Robinson (1939-1941), Kenny Washington ’41, Woody Strode ’39 and Ray Bartlett ’44 — and they led UCLA football to its first undefeated season.
Henry Russell Sanders, football coach from 1949–57, led UCLA to 66 victories and a national championship in 1954 until his death in 1958, of a heart attack. John Wooden's basketball teams began to become known. They won four Southern Division titles and were PCC champions three times.
The 1950s were an era of invention and development, as post-war prosperity contributed to UCLA’s expansion. Along with new buildings, new fields of study opened up drawing more students, and renowned faculty to the university. School spirit was high, and found a voice as Bruins celebrated their winning football team.
