Feb 4, 2014 · San Jose is now the Bay Area's largest city. San Jose has grown spectacularly, from a population of 95,000 in 1950 to nearly 1,000,000 today. San Jose passed San Francisco by the 1990 census and Oakland by the 1970 census (Figure 1). Virtually all of San Jose's population growth has occurred during the postwar period of automobile suburbanization.
The San Francisco Bay Area Portal. The San Francisco Bay Area (referred to locally as the Bay Area) is a populous region surrounding the San Francisco and San Pablo estuaries in Northern California.
