Yet, this burial has major consequences, because it links carbon pools that cycle fast (oceanic, atmospheric, and terrestrial) with sediment carbon pools that cycle on geological time scales.
The EPA requires that burials at sea take place at least three nautical miles from land and in water at least 600 feet deep. In addition, the EPA must be notified within 30 days of the burial.
