The Lakota (pronounced ; Lakota: Lakȟóta/Lakhóta) are a Native American people. Also known as the Teton Sioux (from Thítȟuŋwaŋ ), they are one of the three prominent subcultures of the Sioux people, with the Eastern Dakota (Santee) and Western Dakota (Wičhíyena).

The Lakota language is still spoken today by many people on the reservations. It is taught throughout the grade levels at reservation schools and is used in traditional ceremonies. As of 2007 the Lakota represented one of the largest communities of Native language speakers left in the United States.
