Henrique da Rocha Lima. Bust at Instituto Butantan. Henrique da Rocha Lima (24 November 1879 – 12 April 1956) was a Brazilian physician, pathologist and infectologist born in Rio de Janeiro. With his friend, Stanislaus von Prowazek, he described what would later be known as Rickettsia prowazekii, the pathogen of epidemic typhus.
After graduation, Rocha Lima went to Germany, where he expanded, under the guidance of Ficker, his studies of microbiology and pathological anatomy, under the guidance of Kaiserling and Orth. He returned to the country two years later, when he collaborated intensely with Oswaldo Cruz, between 1903 and 1909.
