James Francis "Jock" McHale (12 December 1882 – 4 October 1953) was an Australian rules football player and coach for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League in a marathon career that extended from 1903 to 1949.

It is the Jock McHale Medal, and it is fitting the man considered “the Prince of Coaches” had his name posthumously ascribed to the medal given to Grand Final winning coaches since 2001 – almost 50 years after his death.
He holds the records for most games coached in VFL/AFL history, most finals as coach in VFL/AFL history, and the most premierships as coach in VFL/AFL history. The ‘Jock McHale Medal’ is an award given to the coach of the winning premiership team in the AFL and has been awarded since 1950.
