Thomas Frederick
- In 1813, Thomas Frederick from Lancaster, Pennsylvania became the first settler to establish a homestead in what is now Doylestown. William Doyle, for whom the town was named, arrived in 1827 and purchased 50 acres from Frederick and two other early settlers. Doyle moved his family onto the land with the intent to found a new village.

In 1814, a log cabin school opened on the east side of the Scioto River in a Presbyterian church on Spring Street by “voluntary donation” and then closed. Between 1814 and 1816, a number of schools opened but also failed. Some were innovative, including a “night school” for those who worked during the day.
