OP is talking about basically straw tapping whatever spirit is in the drink or soaking the straw in it and putting the straw straight into the drink so that the first sip tastes very strong and guests will stop bitching about their drinks not being strong enough.
When I was a bartender/waitress, two straws indicated your drink was made with diet soda. Doesn't explain why some people do it with other types of drinks, but it worked for knowing your rum-n-diet from your rum-n-coke. Unlike the commenter before me, I've never heard of that diet vs. regular coke trick before.
If you want to drink your beverage more quicker, then use two straws instead of one. This is because when you suck on two straws, the liquid will travel up the straw faster than if there was only one.
